The paint color selected from a swatch under fluorescent store lighting, then applied to a north-facing room that receives cool indirect light all day, is one of the most reliable sources of paint color disappointment in residential decorating. The swatch was accurate — the color is what it appeared to be — but the light in which it’s evaluated determines everything about how a color looks on a wall, and store lighting is rarely representative of residential lighting conditions.
Understanding undertones — the secondary hue embedded in every paint color that becomes more or less apparent depending on the lighting environment — is the knowledge that allows paint color selection to be more predictable and less dependent on trial and error with full-room sample paint tests.
Undertones: What They Are and Why They Matter
Every paint color has an overtone (the color it appears to be) and an undertone (the secondary hue that becomes more apparent in certain lighting conditions). A gray that looks clean and neutral in the store may appear purple-gray (has a violet undertone), blue-gray (has a blue undertone), or green-gray (has a green undertone) in the specific light of your room. Hold a purple sample next to it — if the gray has a purple undertone, the comparison reveals it. This comparative method reveals undertones that appear invisible when viewing the sample in isolation.
A simpler version: compare the paint sample to a pure white. The undertone is the color shift you see relative to pure white — where does the color ‘lean’ away from white? This reveals whether the color has warm (red, orange, yellow) or cool (blue, purple, green) undertones even when the overtone appears neutral.
The Colors That Stay Neutral in Difficult Lighting
Truly neutral colors — those with balanced undertones that don’t shift dramatically under different lighting — are harder to find and often more expensive than colors at either end of the warm-cool spectrum. Paint brands’ proprietary ‘true neutral’ colors (Benjamin Moore’s Classic Gray, Sherwin-Williams’ Agreeable Gray at higher-LRV values) are specifically formulated to minimize undertone shift across lighting conditions.
The test for any color you’re considering for a room with challenging or variable light: observe the sample at different times of day and under the artificial lighting that’s typically used in the evening. A paint chip on the wall for a week reveals more about how the color actually behaves in your specific light than any amount of research or consultation.
Room Orientation and Paint Color Selection
North-facing rooms (cool, indirect light throughout the day) make cool colors feel cold and harsh; warm colors feel more livable. South-facing rooms (warm direct sun for much of the day) make warm colors feel hot and overwhelming; cool colors feel refreshing and appropriate. East-facing rooms receive warm morning light and cool afternoon light — colors that work in both conditions are preferable. West-facing rooms are opposite: cool morning, warm afternoon.
