The Critical Question: Is This Your Only Tub?
Before converting a bathtub to a shower, assess the home’s full bathroom situation. A home with a single bathtub that’s converted to a shower loses all tub bathing capacity — a consideration for households with children who bathe in tubs, for future resale to buyers who may have young children, and for personal use if circumstances change.
Real estate professionals consistently note that a home with no bathtub at all faces a narrower buyer pool at resale than a home with at least one tub. This doesn’t mean tub conversion is a mistake — for the right household and the right home, the improved shower experience clearly outweighs this consideration. Both require proper waterproofing of the substrate before tile or pan installation — this is the step that most determines whether the shower remains watertight over years of use.
Shower Size and the Expanded Footprint Opportunity
A standard tub is 30×60 inches. Converting this space directly to a shower produces a 30×60-inch shower — adequate but not spacious. Many tub conversion projects expand the shower footprint by reconfiguring adjacent space: extending into a linen closet, expanding toward a window, or borrowing space from an adjacent bedroom closet to create a larger shower that genuinely feels luxurious rather than merely functional.
The cost of expanding the footprint is primarily the additional plumbing, tile, and framing work required to address the expanded area. No door to clean, no door hardware to maintain, and the open aesthetic that makes walk-in showers one of the most desirable bathroom features.
Smaller shower footprints that can’t accommodate a doorless design use frameless glass shower doors or panels — which have their own maintenance requirements (water spot cleaning on glass, keeping hinges and hardware clean) but provide a more open visual appearance than framed shower doors. The choice between frameless and framed door systems depends on budget (frameless systems cost significantly more) and aesthetic preference (frameless is more contemporary; framed can suit a wider range of design styles).
